On Wednesday February 21st, Toronto citizens will unite in

a peaceful display of solidarity in response to Al Gore’s message delivered in AN INCONVENIENT TRUTH.

Al Gore is scheduled to speak at 7:00pm at Convocation Hall. As 900 tickets sold in 1 minute, and the website crashed due to more than 20,000 hits in 3 minutes, it is apparent that many in Toronto are in agreement that we are suffering climate change.

Please show your support for his crucial message by attending an hour long candlelight vigil to symbolize that you are willing to become Carbon Neutral and recognize your ecological footprint.

Meet in front of Convocation Hall from 6pm – north of College and west of University Ave. Walk through the main gates of the U of T campus and you will find King’s College Circle. Convocation Hall is on the left. Carry a small light which we will turn off at 7:00pm when Al Gore begins his lecture inside the Hall.

Families are encouraged to attend.

Nuclear Iran

French prez blows West’s cover on Iran using nukes first – it’s not going to happen

For more than two years, all the big Western powers have insisted that Iran's nuclear power program is secretly intended to produce nuclear weapons, and that the minute it gets them it will launch them at Israel.

But on Monday (January 29), French president Jacques Chirac said something very different. He said Iran would never use them first.

"I would say that what is dangerous about this situation is not the fact of [Iran] having a nuclear bomb," Chirac said in reply to a journalist's question.

"Where will it drop it, this bomb?'' Chirac asked scornfully. "On Israel? [The missile] would not have gone 200 metres into the air before Tehran would be razed."

He spoke as if deterrence would work even against Iran. As if the country were run by sane human beings who don't want their children burned, crushed and vaporized by Israeli and American nuclear weapons.

He's not supposed to talk like that in public.

"Chirac gave us a moment of honesty,'' said Alireza Nourizadeh, chief researcher at the London-based Centre for Arab-Iranian Studies. "His comment was basically what I believe to be the position of Britain, the United States and much of the West: if Israel is attacked, there will be no hesitation to bring retaliation and destruction to Iran."

And that, Chirac concluded, meant that Iran would not use its nuclear weapons to attack Israel should it ever acquire them.

In Chirac's view, the danger is not that Iran would use its nuclear weapons, but that they would lead to a general proliferation of such weapons in the Middle East.

"Why wouldn't Saudi Arabia do it?" he asked. "Why wouldn't it help Egypt to do it as well? That is the real danger."

But he's not supposed to say that either.

Those are the West's allies, the very countries that the United States is currently trying to mobilize to lead an anti-Iranian alliance of Sunni Arab states.

Chirac was simply stating the truth as he (and many others) see it, but his comments completely undermined the joint Western position, so the following day he was forced to retract them. He didn't say he was wrong, however, just that he'd thought he was speaking "off the record" when discussing Iran, as the interview was originally about climate change.

France is clearly very worried by the drumbeat of anti-Iranian propaganda in Washington, which sounds alarmingly similar to the campaign of misinformation waged by the Bush administration before it attacked Iraq.

Last month, Chirac was forced to cancel a planned visit to Tehran by his foreign minister, Philippe Douste-Blazy, because his allies did not trust France to stick to the party line. They were doubtless right in their suspicions.

But France is also right to argue that Iranian nuclear weapons, if they existed, would be primarily defensive in nature and would not be used to attack Israel, because nuclear deterrence still works and Iranians do not want their country to commit suicide.

It is also right to worry that an Iranian bomb would create pressures for further proliferation, as Arab countries that have lived under the threat of Israeli nuclear weapons for 40 years decide that living under the threat of Iranian nuclear weapons as well, with no means of deterrence or retaliation, is simply intolerable.

Certainly, France is utterly hypocritical to worry about Middle Eastern countries owning nuclear weapons when it has had them itself for almost half a century, but that is equally true of all the other great powers.

And it is jumping to conclusions when it assumes that Iran's stated (and quite legal) desire to enrich uranium for nuclear power generation conceals a drive to get an actual nuclear weapon as soon as possible.

The truth may be that Iran is for the moment seeking only a "threshold'' nuclear weapons capacity: a level of technological expertise from which it could, in an emergency, develop actual nuclear weapons in only six months or so. Such a position is entirely legal, and some 40 countries currently hold it.

The truth may also be that the nuclear-armed neighbour Iran really worries about is not Israel but Pakistan, whose 1998 nuclear tests scared Iranian strategists half to death. They don't worry about the intentions of Pakistan's current dictator, General Pervez Musharraf, but they know it is a one-bullet regime and they worry a great deal about what kind of fanatics might succeed him in power.

So maybe Chirac's gaffe wasn't as accidental as it seemed. Maybe he wants people to re-examine all the lies and half-truths we are being told about Iran as Washington seems to be gearing up for another attack.

The Faculty of Art of the OntarioCollege of Art &
Design (OCAD) is pleased to present its
mostinternationally recognized alumnus Michael Snow,
in conversation with Bruce Elder, on Thursday, January
25, 2007, 6:30 pm, as part of Art Creates Change, an
annual series of presentations by notable
Canadian artists at the forefront of their professional
practices.

Michael Snow is an internationally-acclaimed filmmaker
and multi-disciplinary artist. Snow crosses
disciplinary boundaries by working in
painting,sculpture, video, film, photography,
holography, drawing, books and music. Since the 1960's
Snow has radically reframed ideas of time and space
through consistently inventive camera related works of
art. His work challenges perception and redirects our
experience of art. Snow's work is represented in
private and public collections including the National
Gallery of Canada (Ottawa), the Museum of Modern Art
(New York), Museum Ludwig (Cologne and Vienna), and
Centre Georges-Pompidou (Paris).

Snow's award-winning films have been presented at
festivals around the world and are included in
the collections of the Anthology Film Archives in New
York City, the Royal Belgian Film Archives, Brussels,
and the Oesterreichesches FilmMuseum, Vienna. His film
"Wavelength" won the Grand Prize at theInternational
Experimental Film Festival in Belgium (1967), and
"SoIs This" won the Los Angeles Film Critics award
(1982).

One of Snow's most recent installations called The
Windows Suite launched at the TorontoPantages Hotel
and Spa during the Toronto Film Festival in
September2006. The permanent installation is made up
of thirty-two varied sequences of images, presented on
large-scale plasma screens inseveral windows of hotel
and related condo buildings facing Victoria Street. The
image sequences show curious scenes, like police
searching a hotel room with flashlights, fish swimming
from window towindow.

Public art works well-known toTorontonians include
Snow's Flightstop, an installation oflife-sized
Canadian geese in flight, hanging in the main atrium
spaceof the Toronto Eaton Centre, and The Audience,
large-scalegold-painted sculptures of figures enjoying
an event, mounted abovethe northeast and northwest
entrances of the Rogers Centre (formerly known as the
SkyDome).

The recipient of numerous awards, Snow received a
Guggenheim Fellowship (1972), the Order of
Canada(1982), the Governor General's Award in Visual
and Media Arts(2000), the Queen's Golden Jubilee Medal
(2002), and an honorary doctorate from the
Universit#xE9; de Paris I,
Panth#xE9;on-Sorbonne(2004). Snow is also an OCAD
alumnus and was recognized as an OCAD Honorary Fellow
in 1983.

Bruce Elder is a filmmaker, critic and Professor of
Film Studies at Ryerson University. He is
considered one of Canada's foremost avant-garde
filmmakers and has authored many articles and books on
film, electronic music, poetry, social theory and the
visual arts. Elder is Ryerson University's Director of
the York/Ryerson Universities Joint Program in
Communication and Culture.

Michel Foucault vs. Noam Chomsky

In 1971, American linguist/social activist Noam Chomsky squared off against French philosopher Michel Foucault on Dutch television ... the program was entitled 'Human Nature: Justice Vs. Power' and offered sharp contrasts between the more traditional view of 'human nature' and what would become a postmodernist perspective ... Chomsky, following a rationalist lineage going back to at least Plato, believes that there is a foundational 'nature' and that its positive aspects (love, creativity, recognizing and embracing justice) must be realized, while Foucault remains skeptical of any such notion... for him, the issue is not so much whether 'justice' or 'human nature' 'exists,' but how they have historically (and currently) function in society ... in regard to justice, he says (this is not included in the clips): "... the idea of justice in itself is an idea which in effect has been invented and put to work in different types of societies as an instrument of a certain political and economic power or as a weapon against that power..." The point of any political struggle, for Foucault, is to alter the 'power relations' in which we all find ourselves

Hello Lovers,

First, I'd like to welcome those of you who are new to this space. I've been away for awhile, sucked into the vortex of the physical world, busy working, creating, learning, and manifesting--and this space has been quiet. After being away from Torontoland for quite sometime, I've returned and have been reconnecting with old friends, while also meeting new ones, who will all play a pivotal role in the future of Touch the Sun.

I've just finished a training program for Film/ TV industry professionals here in Torontoland. It was an intensive ten weeks of in-class lectures, guidance, panels, and seminars. Part of the program was the development of a company and a 'first' project to launch through that company, and as a result of the program, I've received much insight into Touch the Sun, where the idea was lacking, and how to finally birth this juggernaut. I've also just finished Directing and Producing my first feature film and am currently developing three TV series and a handful of feature films.

And now, I give to you the new Touch the Sun...

Touch the Sun Productions begins through me as a film/ video/ multi-media production company that is already established, staffed, and ready to go. Touch the Sun Productions is a Film and TV Production company focusing on the production of long-form ethnographic and documentary productions for theatrical release and Documentary and Ethnographic TV series that will focus on multi-cultural bridge building, inter-connectivity, Green, Spiritual and forward thinking ideas, and Political and Social reform. These productions may take on the form of the experimental, or poetic, or traditional narrative type productions.

The intention is to welcome other artistic disciplines, healers, and forward thinkers into Touch the Sun Productions to become a multi-disciplinary production collective and to create an intermingling of ideas and art, and the Production company will bring those ideas to life through the disciplines represented in the collective.

Touch the Sun Productions will establish an Artist-Run Centre and I've already gots my sights on an old Vaudeville theatre that's in need of some lovin'. This centre will be a place for the company to work and play together, and will also provide a means of presenting our work to an audience by hosting one-off multi-disciplinary events and by having regular presentation possibilities for film, theatre/ dance, visual arts, music and so on...

As mentioned, I am busy developing film and TV series through Touch the Sun Productions. I will always use the international markets to sell Touch the Sun Production's work, which will bring money into the company, while also promoting the collective. I will always retain educational rights to sell dvds on the Touch the Sun Production's website, which will allow Touch the Sun Productions to become a self-distribution entity for its own work.

Touch the Sun will launch a full-on broadcasting entity within the next year, which will feature the work of the Toronto company through a film, video, and new media channel, internet radio station for music and information, a visual arts gallery and publishing house, which will be run out of the Toronto Artist-Run Centre. Remember, the Artist-Run Centre houses a fully functioning production collective, which enables us to create our own work, hold workshops, training, and healing sessions, for internet broadcast. An open call for user-generated content will also be extended, as long as the work fits into Touch the Sun's mandate. The eventual goal for this webcasting network is to become a self-sufficient producer of original content for the web, and a viable marketing and financing plan is in place to get us to that stage. The most important thing I've learned in the program I just finished is that the future of broadcasting is on the internet--one only has to look at You Tube to understand this BUT no one has figured out a viable way of making money from the internet--until now.

It is still my intention to establish Artist Run Centres, either in-city, or eco-village, around the globe to create a network of venues to present work in, produce work out of, tour work through, and broadcast work onto the web from. I've looked into satellite connectivity and IT IS NOT THAT EXPENSIVE, so even the most remote eco-village can be connected to the network and will be able to broadcast to the web.

And this is where those who came on as facilitators before, come in now. I still would be honored for your participation in this project. In all honesty, it can't be done without you. There still is no measure as to what a collective should or should not be BUT each collective must include film and tv production, or align with film/ tv people, in some way, so that each artist run centre can function as a generator of original content for the web, and for the world markets. This is how we make our money to keep functioning and I am willing and capable of working with each of you to show you the ways of film and tv producing, if you still wish to be involved.

On a side note, I've established a development relationship with a web-tv company in San Fran, and will be arriving there in Jan/ February to begin discussions about possible collaborations with them for the future. More details will be available when they are finalized. While in SF, I will also begin developing a film with a new friend, and will be laying the foundation for a SF Touch the Sun Production company there to work in tandem with the Toronto office.

My silence is over. The dance begins now.

Green Party releases biodiversity plan on anniversary of UN Convention

Ottawa, Dec. 29 - On the fourth day of Christmas, the Green Party of Canada issued an urgent call to action to protect partridges, pear trees, calling birds, French hens, turtle doves and Canada's endangered species from the threat of extinction.

Fourteen years after the UN Convention on Biological Diversity went into force, the federal government has yet to pass effective Species At Risk legislation and complete Canada's network of national parks and marine protected areas, said Green Party leader Elizabeth May.

Today the Green Party responded with the release of Investing in Biodiversity - a comprehensive blueprint for protecting Canada's natural capital. The plan calls for $500 million to be added to existing 2003 and 2005 budget commitments to complete the national parks and marine protected areas system.

"Every prime minister of Canada for the last 20 years has committed to completing the network - except the current prime minister," said Ms. May. "Canada desperately needs a bold new campaign to protect biodiversity but the Harper government insists on looking the other way."

"Biodiversity" is a complex word for a simple concept. It means nature itself - everything from micro-organisms to landscape diversity, from partridges and pear trees to forests and oceans.

Other urgent issues addressed in Investing in Biodiversity include the need to overhaul the failed Species at Risk Act and provide the research and logistical support to ensure that legislation prevents adverse impacts on habitats and ecosystems.

Investing in Biodiversity is a follow-up to the Green Party's Green Plan (GP2) released earlier this year, which condemned the federal government for systematically undermining the role of scientific research in supporting ecologically protective legislation.

According to the report released today, knowledge of species and the ecosystems in which they live must be the foundation of an effective national biodiversity conservation strategy to protect vital ecosystems like natural prairie, old-growth forests, un-trawled ocean floors and freshwater habitats.

"Not only has the federal government been gutting research agencies created to understand biodiversity, it is also ignoring the recommendations of its own scientists on how to protect species and their habitats," said May. "Without scientific knowledge guiding our decisions, we will continue to over-exploit resources and suffer the economic and social consequences."

In April 2006, Fisheries and Oceans minister Loyola Hearn ignored the advice of Department of Fisheries and Oceans scientists and blocked the listing of the Interior Fraser Coho salmon as a "species at risk." The listing would not have reduced the commercial fishery but the minister's decision was an extinction order for the coho.

The Green Party will continue to put pressure on the federal government to live up to its obligations under the UN Convention on Biodiversity to prevent species loss and habitat destruction while fostering a holistic and humble view of our place in nature through public education and awareness.

Changing the way we place economic value on the natural world through full-cost accounting and taxation and fiscal incentives to conserve valuable land will also help Canada protect its dwindling biodiversity.

The Convention on Biological Diversity, negotiated under the auspices of the United Nations Environment Program, has three goals: to promote the conservation of biodiversity, the sustainable use of its components, and the fair and equitable sharing of benefits arising out of the utilization of genetic resources.

East New York Children's Center NEEEDS YOU!!!

What's up, everybody?
I'm the Director of Fund Development for a small nonprofit in East New York, Brooklyn. This neighborhood is in lots of ways a throwback to the bombed-out 70s despite its ever growing crop of Instant Half a Million Dollar Houses. You cant buy fresh fruit or vegetables out here, drugs/gangs/violence remain a problem and there's absolutely nothing for the youth - no music, no creative art space, no place to chill. I partnered with this awesome older man (picture "Coach" with the whistle around his neck and the clipboard - That's Sam : ) to use the money he's been given by the City Council to open up a Children's Center.

I need help designing the programs. For all of you guys who work with urban youth, lets talk about what works. My vision is counseling, crafts, music, workshops, a science and math club and some really hands on stuff to get the kids ENGAGED. I need more than just ideas but also the nuts and bolts (For example, not just you should have a pottery class but you can find the equipment here, you'll need this much staff per this many kids, and etc.) and links to good orgs. in NYC we can partner with- thats a definite must!!!! I'd like to meet anyone working with at risk youth who is holistic in their approach.

The outer or objective empirical reality of the physical body’s senses is only a small part of your world. In your new reality of this Great Game of the Gold Ring a Way shower is one of a spiritual universe, which means that which is non-physical and exists in the invisible. In this vast realm you are the player who lives within the full light spectrum.

Your realm as a Way shower is the Realm of light, the Fifth Dimension. From the Infrared to the Ultraviolet you are connected to the universe and all the stars, the Teachers of Light. Your eyes open up to the vast expanse through deeper connections within your nervous system, which are the flowering of your higher chakras.

The two main realities a Way shower understands is the Individual and the Collective. The individual is yours alone and no other has the same set of core beliefs, which create your worldview and perceptions. In the collective reality we are one and in this shared belief system our connection is the world we live within and our society. In the collective reality we are moving to expanded awareness where the Way showers are connecting to the ultimate reality wherein the pure essence of self, the soul is allowing the connection to higher intelligences of the over soul and the spirit of universal cosmic consciousness. This engages the higher mind to empower the rational ego into direct manifestation of will towards physical creation.

In moving through the dimensions and the densities Way showers are able to see the levels of creation and the layers upon layers. Densities are vibratory levels of light as it manifests. Dimensions are worlds within worlds. Way showers must know where they are in the game to know how to stay in alignment with the impulses of transformative energy being channeled into this system.

The Teachers of Light are invoking the ceremony of ascension, which is bringing forth a new paradigm for the planet. The great move of the game in the Third Dimension is occurring on a cosmic time line. The cycles of transformation align through a macrocosmic microcosmic interaction. These cycles happen through universal agreement of the Teachers of Light and the Grand Universe.

The timeline of the transformation is based upon the Grand Cycle of 225 million years, which is called Grand Precession. Day and Night result from the planetary spin on the axis. The Year results from the orbital motion around the Sun. The precession of the equinoxes is called the Grand Cycle of approximately 25,920 years and then the movement of the movement of this region of space around the central sun of the Milky Way Galaxy, which occurs every 225 Million years, and then around the Great Central Sun of the Universe, which occurs every 20 Billion years. These are all spirals in their movement.

In this spiral progression into future timelines there are points at which the lower densities or dimensions of existence can be compressed by beings of higher intelligences able to operate at much higher vibratory rates. They can channel in messages that allow for collective changes in linear time.

All time intersects in the eternal now and from this Now there are what can be termed horizontal and vertical times. The eternal now can be thought of as a vertical plane that intersects countless past, present and future probability lines of horizontal time. A soul is in full awareness of this eternal now this soul becomes free from singular identity in time and space. They become multidimensional and can move up and down through the horizontal timelines, experiencing past, present and future probabilities at will.

In the vast expanse of time and space this universe has been limited by the universal controls. We are at the completion of a grand cycle, a 20 billion year trek through space, a progression, the transition or ascension is occurring so that we are becoming one again in the ocean of spirit. The influx of light that is providing for the evolution is the reenergizing of the network which installs and reconfigures all the programs to a higher level of activation.

The Arcturian Alignment will gather this energy together and bring it into form. The game is ending with the completion of the circle, the Gold Ring. We are playing the final moves and there is the necessity to achieve the completion of the great gathering of the collective. The Way showers are the ones who are to play and build upon the eons of time and finish the game.

There is a basic difference between the static philosophy and moving philosophy, static God and moving God, static science and moving science, static tradition and moving tradition. Basavanna says, “There is destruction for what stands but not for that, which moves”.

Whenever nature gives birth to new wonders in the world, be it in science, religion, tradition or something else it represents a moving character. Nevertheless, this moving character will not stay for a long time because of our own static way of thinking. Whenever the new research emerged in the history of humanity, it has maintained moving character in the beginning, but slowly it has lost the beauty of the moving character because of the orthodox interaction of our own finite mind. But the transformation of moving character to static character occurs only in human mind, not in nature.

In the western world, now there is a spiritual madness to dig all the static philosophies of the ancient history. Some are talking on Tantra, some are talking on Yoga, some are talking on Vastu, some are talking on mediation, some are talking on UFO’s and so on. In fact, they are searching for the static shelter to compensate or to define their own stagnant way of life. Nevertheless, our ancient Sages, Buddha, Krishna, Jesus, Rama, Prophet and other prominent spiritual personalities emerged with moving philosophy; not a static one, but who made it static? Ask yourself! Which philosophy, science, religion, God and tradition you are representing? Is it static or moving one?

I live here on the North Coast. But I have some land up in Washington that needs a good home.

This place is way out of sight up on a hilltop that is situated way up in Ferry County in North East Washington State and is near water and National Forest lands.

It is a very private and sunny 10 acre piece of land with a view that would make a great Self Sustainable Solar Powered Homestead for someone who wanted to start putting some roots down in one place and to build their own natural home in a place that has few building restrictions.

The land is nicely situated way up high on a grassy hilltop with a great view overlooking the beautiful Kettle River valley and then across to the mountains on the other side.

It is about 5 miles north of the historic little town of Curlew on highway 21 up in the northern end of the county and it is near tribal lands and other good folks in the local community.

Good building sites, almost flat in many places, Trees out behind and not too far from the year around creek below and within a short walk out back to a National Forest that extends way up the mountain behind you and with grassy fields to the south and below and at a relatively Low Elevation of only 2500 feet you may be able to grow almost anything there and it is a nice sunny spot that is perfect for Solar Power. You will need to put in a well, eventually. There is power and there should be phone lines nearby. It is not that far out but I would stay off the grid and out of sight.

I just want to find a good home for this place since I am committed elsewhere and can't get away. But I live off the grid myself on all Solar power and have been doing so for over twenty years on raw undeveloped land as far as the cocunty is concerned and that means very low taxes stay in place long term. They don't see a house, they don't tax a house.

Consider this to be a safe haven that you can actually retreat to and live when you retire or on in any time of need or as a place to bring together around to create a sustainabvle way of life in community. - T

The New Year begins, the Sirius Star Gate opens into the Harmonic of the 8:8:8 on the 8th of August and is followed by the energy of the Full Moon on the next day. The gate remains open until the 12th of August. Then, on the 13th of August, Venus transits into the fifth house of Leo, governed by the Sun and the element of Fire. The Fire Goddess Comes - the energy of the Solar Feminine floods the planet.

The fiery energy of the Divine Feminine in her manifestation as Sekmet, the lioness, has been felt on the planet in recent weeks, but now, the Fire Goddess flames forth in the fiery and intense energy of Leo. The 13th of August: Sekmet Comes

On the 13th of August Venus enters into Leo. Here the normally soft energy of the Goddess becomes Fiery and Passionate. Sekmet was the ancient Egyptian Goddess of Fire and Transformation. She was represented by a figure of a woman with the head of a Lioness.

There is an ancient Egyptian archetypal story that tells how Ra (the Sun) sent Sekmet forth to cleanse the Earth, and how she caused much destruction until she was herself transformed and changed into Hathor, the Goddess of Higher Love and Beauty.

And so, dearest ones, the challenge now within each one of you, and globally, is to transmute the Solar Fire from its lower expression of greed, power, and destruction into its higher expression of Love and Beauty and Harmony. And then you will experience the Joy that Hathor brings to the Planet.

The 26th and 27th of August : Resonance and Reverberation

The 26th will provide a Harmonic link back to the 8:8:8 energy, since the 26/8/2006 is also an 8:8:8. Whatever energies and issues arise either personally or globally at that time will be the issues that will be worked through in the next year, until you reach the 9:9:9 harmonic on the 9th and 27th of September in 2007. This will be the final clearing and closing of this cycle that began in 1999.

There will be an International Day of action on Saturday 12th August when demonstrations will be held around the world.

Mass rally & march in Toronto will start at 1.00 pm in front of the Israeli Consulate at 180 Bloor St. W., on the north side of Bloor, just west of Avenue Road. (Closest subway stop is Museum Station)

The US/UK proposal to send international forces to southern Lebanon, on their conditions, will only escalate this war. Deploying more firepower that is clearly 100% on the side of Israel will not stop this violence but will worsen the conflict. The immediate need is for Israel to stop its attacks.

The pundits got it wrong: Caledonia wasn't the longest-running native blockade; Grassy Narrows was – and is. Far off the media radar, residents of the northwestern Ontario reserve have been barricading a logging road to hold off Abitibi Consolidated since December 2002.

Even if the provincial government manages to douse the flames at Six Nations, the dust-up in Grassy's neck of the woods is as boundless as Ontario's boreal hinterland.

With large-scale logging poised to push into the northern half of the boreal forest and mineral exploration ready to rush across the whole region, aboriginal activists are cranking up the volume.

There is now a constitutional challenge to Ontario's Mining Act as well as a lawsuit on behalf of trappers incensed by the disappearance of animals. Over the past year, nine communities have called for a complete development moratorium, and June saw a flurry of press conferences and a 2,100-kilometre walkathon to Queen's Park. From Monday (July 10) Grassy is hosting a six-day forest action camp-in for eco-defenders.

The fight for this hypersensitive area, part of the second-largest intact original forest on earth, has attracted a growing list of citified supporters, from the Federation of Ontario Naturalists to Greenpeace and the Wildlands League. The newest additions are the savvy ForestEthics and allied Rainforest Action Network, veterans of the famed Clayoquot Sound struggle and fresh from a success in protecting 2 million hectares of British Columbia's Great Bear Rainforest.

ForestEthics is now haunting the corridors of corporate and government power with its particular contribution to ecosystem protection – the all-mighty boycott. ***

Speaking in a sparsely attended press room in Queen's Park, Grassy Narrows' Steve Fobister is literally a voice from the wilderness. "The blockade started because the company and the Ministry of Natural Resources have treated First Nations people like they are invisible,'' says Fobister, deputy chief of the 11-hectare reserve that came to international attention in the 1970s when residents were diagnosed with mercury poisoning caused by a pulp plant upstream in Dryden.

Grassy Narrows, which, unlike the other eight First Nations calling for a moratorium, is in the southern half of Ontario's boreal forest, received a boost in May from an Amnesty International report to the UN Committee on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights. The group accuses Canadian authorities of violating treaty rights and international law by overriding Grassy's opposition to logging on its traditional lands.

The community's dogged three-and-a-half-year-old obstruction of a logging road is now being added to ForestEthics' wide list of favoured campaigns. "We're inspired by their commitment and energy," says the org's Toronto-based Kim Fry.

The group's current boycott against Victoria's Secret (which uses boreal fibre from Alberta for many of the 390 million catalogues it produces annually) has gained wide publicity in the U.S. with hundreds of shopping-mall protests.

And ForestEthics has launched a campaign against Grand & Toy's U.S. parent, Office Max, for buying wood products from the embattled Whiskey Jack Forest near Grassy Narrows.

On the other hand, it is working with other companies like Home Depot, which agreed to significantly increase its boreal wood purchases from Tembec, whose northeastern Ontario operations are certified by the enviro-endorsed Forest Stewardship Council.

At the same time, ForestEthics and others plan to hound Premier Dalton McGuinty with protests and ad campaigns in the lead-up to next year's provincial election, taking him to task for commitments he made in March 2003 to establish comprehensive land use planning throughout the boreal zone.

Activists point to MNR draft plans released last November to begin cutting north of the present legal logging limit in the Valhalla Forest adjacent to Woodland Caribou Provincial Park, near the Manitoba border. Enviros are also trying to spare the remaining virgin stands and caribou in the region's Kenogami and Trout Lake forests. ***

The day after Fobister's press conference, the Kitchenuhmaykoosib Inninuwug First Nation arrives at Queen's Park in force. From their isolated reserve on Big Trout Lake in the far northwest, scores of KI residents, as well as supporters from other communities in the region, parade down Avenue Road behind their green, yellow and blue flags, pushing baby strollers and banging on ceremonial drums. They accompany several men from the reserve who are on the last leg of a 34-day, 2,100-kilometre walk from Pickle Lake to the legislature to protest provincially sanctioned attempts to drill for platinum on their traditional land.

KI has launched a lawsuit challenging the constitutionality of Ontario's Mining Act, based on the Supreme Court of Canada Mikisew decision ruling last November that First Nations must be consulted and accommodated on development on lands covered by treaties. The act grants prospectors "free entry'' to look for deposits almost anywhere.

The case could have far-reaching consequences, since pending land claims on treaty lands cover almost all of the northern boreal. Some 4,400 mining claims are also already staked in the region, spurred by high commodity prices and recent rich finds.

"It's increasing all over the north," says Vernon Morris, chief of the Muskrat Dam First Nation, of rampant mineral exploration. His community, southwest of KI, had to call off its traditional spring goose and caribou hunt this year in an area disrupted by diamond-mining giant De Beers's exploratory drilling and helicopter flights.

Premier McGuinty, meanwhile, began the summer by praising De Beers at the inauguration of construction on Ontario's first diamond mine, which will cover 50 square kilometres near the coast of James Bay. His government has rejected calls for a northern development moratorium, insisting that enough checks and balances are already in place to protect native communities and the environment.

"The Ontario government believes that the existing regulations under the environmental assessment process and the approvals process for permits and licences will sufficiently protect the environment," says the MNR's Barry Radford. He adds that the Ontario Secretariat for Aboriginal Affairs is seeking input from native groups on new draft guidelines spelling out consultation requirements in accord with recent Supreme Court rulings.

Yet in December, even the MNR's own advisory Provincial Forest Policy Committee unanimously "encouraged" the province to consider a moratorium on future resource development in the northern boreal zone until a new land use planning program is in place.

In regard to Grassy Narrows, MNR Kenora East supervisor Shawn Stevenson says the community has an open invitation to return to negotiations and participate in the next five-year forest management plan for the area if it ends its blockade. "The ministry wishes to strike a balance and resolve these issues," he says. "We have to maintain economic benefits as well as a supply of wood to the local mills."

Stevenson says he can't discuss the complaints of the Grassy Narrows trappers because of a court case they have launched, but he defends clear-cut logging as the best silvacultural system for the boreal. "The species of trees we have up here in the northwest are adapted to large disturbances like fire. [Clear-cutting] is the process of creating large disturbances."

Native and enviro groups beg to differ. They counter that industrial forestry irreparably alters boreal ecosystems, noting that woodland caribou have been extirpated everywhere it has spread. Fobister says caribou were abundant around Grassy Narrows when logging was done with horses, skidders and chainsaws, before clear-cutting began about 25 years ago.

"Then they wiped out the porcupine, caribou, osprey and other wildlife," he recounts. "There's no life in a clear-cut area. You can't even hear a bird sing." the end

Hello fellow Sun Touchers--

In just over a month, I leave to go to Wyoming as I've rustled up some work on a ranch as a photographer, which actually really excites me because I'll be in pretty much wide-open land and I'll have my own horse--and all I have to do is take photographs. I'm done this contract a few days before Burning Man and would like to come. I can fly into LA or San Fran on the 24th but I'm going to have minimal things with me and I need to arrange transportation to BRC and a camping space.

For reasons that will be evident to anyone who peruses the book, I feel a certain level of urgency in getting these ideas out into the world. My hope is that this book will give people new ways to think about our world situation, on many levels.

Below, I have enclosed the back cover quotes, a press release describing the book's contents, and then my tour schedule, as it stands. It looks like there will be a party for 2012 in San Francisco on the night of June 7th, and we may organize something in Los Angeles as well, so if you are in either of those places, and would like to attend those events, please email me. A generation ago, pursuing "mind expansion" through altered states of consciousness was hip as well as culturally relevant. By the end of the 1960s, not only were psychedelic drugs outlawed but our society had rejected the idea that it was valuable to open the "doors of perception" at all. Author Daniel Pinchbeck has deep personal roots in the New York counterculture of the 1950s and 1960s. His father was an abstract painter, and his mother, Joyce Johnson, was a member of the Beat Generation and dated Jack Kerouac as On the Road hit the bestseller lists in 1957 (chronicled in Johnson's bestselling book, Minor Characters: A Beat Memoir). Pinchbeck was a founder of the 1990s literary magazine Open City with fellow writers Thomas Beller and Robert Bingham. He has written for many publications, including Esquire, The New York Times Magazine, the Village Voice, and Rolling Stone. In 1994, he was chosen by The New York Times Magazine as one of "Thirty Under Thirty" destined to change our culture.
A profound spiritual crisis in his late twenties led Pinchbeck to the study of shamanism. His first book, Breaking Open the Head: A Psychedelic Journey into the Heart of Contemporary Shamanism, recounted his personal initiation into several tribal cultures that continue to use "magic mushrooms" and other hallucinogens in their rituals. Pinchbeck became convinced of the legitimacy of the shamanic and mystical worldview held by indigenous peoples around the world.
This brought up troubling questions: If the modern West, in its pursuit of rational science and materialism, had rejected crucially important aspects of reality, what did this say about our society, and its immediate future?
2012 chronicles the writer's journey to answer these questions, beginning with an exploration of prophecy, especially the vision of the Classical Mayan culture (also the subject of a new Mel Gibson movie, Apocalypto, filmed entirely in the Mayan language). The Mayans were obsessed with time, and according to their Sacred Calendar, the year 2012 marks the end of a "Great Cycle" of more than 5,000 years, and the climax of larger patterns that appear to go back 16 billion years. Pinchbeck discovered that a number of theorists, working outside the mainstream of archaeology, make a compelling argument that 2012 could represent a transformation in the nature of human consciousness as well as, potentially, a unified and harmonic global civilization.
In 2012, Pinchbeck recounts his own personal experiences as he follows the traces of prophetic and occult knowledge, including a visit to southern England to investigate the crop circles, and a journey to the Brazilian Amazon to study Santo Daime, a religion that uses the psychedelic drink ayahuasca as its sacrament. He unifies the ideas of a large number of writers, philosophers, and physicists to create a new cultural context for understanding the many aspects of being that to date have been ignored and suppressed by mainstream culture and the academy.

6 Nations solidarity

For almost 60 days now, the community of the Six Nations Haudensaunee Confederacy has held a blockade to defend land that is rightfully theirs from further encroachment by real estate developers and the Canadian government. Last Thursday, OPP forces mounted a pre-dawn raid to assault those taking this stand, deploying cops with guns drawn to pepper spray, beat and arrest community members. The government had hoped to remove resistance to the development of Six Nations land by real estate developer Henco Industries Ltd. The Six Nations community mobilized in response and drove the OPP out. The community's determination to assert its national sovereignty and legitimate treaty rights, like the blockade itself, has only strengthened since.

Audaciously, less than a week after this unprovoked attack, the Harper government's Minister of Indian Affairs is speaking in Toronto on the topic of "Native Self-Government." No First Nations leader has authorized Minister Jim Prentice to speak on this topic, and it is an issue that he clearly does not understand in even the most basic terms. In fact, since Ontario's McGuinty government has actively distanced itself from these OPP actions, the possibility that federal hands were in on this operation is a very real one. Meanwhile, the threat of possible RCMP or military intervention continues to hang over the Six Nations community. The government of Minister Prentice and Prime Minister Harper still refuses to uphold its treaty obligations and respect the legitimate leadership of First Nations people. Until they do, there is nothing Jim Prentice can say that is worth listening to.

It is imperative that this government understand that people will not tolerate further attacks on the sovereignty of the Six Nations Haudensaunee Confederacy or other First Nations communities. Come out this Friday to join in sending this message, and talk to friends and allies to ensure that we do so in the maximum numbers possible. Solidarity actions and demonstrations have already been organized in Tyendinaga, Kahnawake, Montreal, Vancouver, Calgary and elsewhere. But the Canadian government remains two-faced, and especially given the underlying racism of last Monday's demonstration in Caledonia, it is extremely crucial that solidarity activities spread.

Seen as Buddha, Sage, Guru, Shaman(ka), Yogi(ni), Wizard, Sheikh, Prophet, Mystic, etc, it is the archetypal magician who is the intermediary between his or her tribe/ culture, and the universe, relaying our place within the cosmos. It is the poetry of each archetypal magician’s experience, firmly rooted in the Divine Feminine, that has become the world’s mystical traditions, and it is through male oriented rationalization of the feminine realm of experience that has birthed our religions.

Art is the only accurate social barometer that exists. In its original form, Art was the archetypal magician’s first means of relaying our place within the cosmos through mythology, ritual, poetry, painting and dance. Because the archetypal magician’s experience is often beyond words; symbols, metaphors, and other abstract representations were used as his or her only means of explaining the intensity of their experience, and it is through literal hermeneutics of the abstract that man has misunderstood the art and poetics of the Magician’s experience, subjugating the abstract into dogma and intolerance.

A Theosophical journey, the Poetry of Experience will reveal how the ancient wisdom of Indian/ Aryan Vedic culture flowed outward to influence and become Hinduism, Bon/ Jainism/ Buddhism, Zoroastrianism/ Mithraism, the Merkabah/ Cabala/ Judaism, Taoism, Shinto/ Zen, Native North and South American Shamanism, Sufism/ Islam, and Gnosticism/ Christianity.

Presented as a 9-hour mini-series, the Poetry of Experience will be broken down into chapters, each chapter representing a tradition and animated in the art forms relevant to the region said tradition originated from (Vedic wisdom animated to look like an Indian painting, Taoist wisdom animated to look like Chinese water colour, and so on). As the wisdoms blend and become another, the artwork will blend and shift accordingly. It is through animation that the world of the adept, or Magician will be brought to life, revealing the Poetry of his or her experience, that which is otherwise not seen by most. Likewise, an orchestra will be compiled featuring musicians from each country featured in this exploration. As the artwork, and chapters blend and merge, the music will shift accordingly, further highlighting the transitions between traditions.

From this 9-hour mini series, a two-and-a-half to three-hour feature will be cut for the festival circuit.

The Poetry of Experience is intended to be a poem, or experience for the viewing audience that will reveal the links between traditions, that already exist, by quoting from the texts in Native tongue and by featuring the wisdom of each tradition, layered over music and animation. By employing non-traditional and experimental documentary techniques, the poetics of the mystical traditions will be revealed, eventually shifting towards standard “talking head” documentary techniques, mirroring the shift from the Poetry of Experience towards the rationalization of it.
